Facts ~
The Town of Poestenkill, established in
1848, is a vital and prosperous community that is rural by choice. We, as
residents of the Town, have pledged to protect its rich rural heritage and
assets, as well as its scenic beauty.
We have a hamlet comprised of a growing
mix of small locally-owned businesses, stores, professional services, and
community facilities. We are equally proud of our farms, many of which have
continued to be family farms, passed down through generations.
Education services for our children are
provided by three centralized school districts: Averill Park, Berlin, and
Brittonkill.
Approximately 37% of our Town is assessed
as residential while those parcels which are agricultural comprise 7%. The
remainder is made up of commercial, light industrial, community services,
and lands assessed as wild or in conservation.
Convenience to employment in Albany and
Troy is a factor which has influenced our steady growth of new homes.
The Town of Poestenkill is governed by a
Town Supervisor and a four-member Town Board. The Town provides municipal
services including fire protection through a contract with the Poestenkill
Volunteer Fire Dept. Highway Dept. services are also provided (snow
removal, road improvements and maintenance). Other town officials include
Town Clerk, two Justices, Town Superintendent of Highways, Assessor, and
Code Enforcement Officer/Building Inspector.
To assist in the administration and
enforcement of land use regulations, we have appointed a Zoning Board of
Appeals and Planning Board. The primary purpose of the Zoning Board is to
interpret law and consider applications for variances, based on the Town's
ordinances. The Planning Board acts in an advisory capacity on policy
related to development, existing or proposed comprehensive plans, and land
use ordinances. We also have a Conservation Advisory Committee whose focus
is on conservation issues within the Town.
Residents and potential new homeowners
are encouraged to call the Town Hall regarding the ordinances. Copies of
the codes, as well as the process for applying for variances, etc. will be
available upon request.
